[HANASHIR:5048] Re: Performance vs. praying

Ellen, you expressed it so beautifully. I never want to consider the
cantorial/shaliach tzibor experience to be a "performance." However, I am
never concerned if the congregation just listens instead of singing along.
Just BEING there together in one place --with the same intentions -- works
for me!

I think the idea of a "performance" came up in this discussion because many
have felt that the presence of a choir might intimidate those who are not so
confident in their own singing. I like the idea someone mentioned that the
choir is there to help the congregation musically and not to perform for
them.

I believe the line between prayer or performance might be crossed, however,
when a new piece or a group of professional pieces is introduced in a formal
way in the setting of a Friday night service. That really depends on each
congregation and its expectations of what can be done in such a service.
Last Friday night, at Beth El in Stamford, Craig Taubman and his on-stage
(on-Bima) bond had everyone reaching a high level of spirituality and
involvement in his unique service. However, he stayed within the order of
prayers as they appear in the prayer book. For me, it was an excellent
Friday night service, with Craig's new, exciting, swinging melodies added.
For me, it fulfilled my need for prayer that evening! However, others came
to see Craig PERFORM, and they were also not disappointed.
