The first female cantors graduated from JTS in 1987. However, in the
Conservative movement there is a range of practice, concerning women's
participation in ritual and other halachic issues as well. Each
congregation's rabbi determines the practices of his/her congregation.
Canadian congregations (Conservative) tend to be more to the "right" on these
issues. (Some would say "more traditional" but this is offensive to those of
us who consider ourselves equally traditional yet accept women as equal
participants in synagogue ritual.) In the U.S. it really varies from city to
city. it's all part of our commitment to pluralism. Both positions are
acceptable within the movement. Today a high percentage of JTS graduates are
women and since there are more jobs than applicants now, they all find jobs.
However, pay is still often inequitable. Is that true for the Reform
movement?
