Neil, your points about the depth of the tradition and the value of
maintaining it are very well taken, and I won't elaborate on them here.

Just one question: Shouldn't the Jewish people (collectively) be
training more rather than fewer people in these traditions?

Why does HUC admit so few candidates every year (or turn away so many),
as this thread suggests?

Who is eligible for admission to the ACC?  Does one have to have
graduated from just one or two schools? (Do JTS-trained cantors
qualify?)  Why can't one take an exam for admission, say..... especially
if that person trained under the supervision of a trained chazzan?
