[HANASHIR:4789] RE: GUITAR ADVICE

Hi, Karen (and friends!)

It's my opinion that the ultimate goal is what determines nylon vs.
steel strings. If one wants to play classical guitar, then the nylon
strings are appropriate to start, because that's where they will
ultimately end up. However, if one wants to play folk, rock, or any
other style, it's best for them to start on the same instrument (and
strings) to meet their goal.

It is difficult for anyone starting out - their fingers will hurt if
they do it right! The steel strings are actually skinnier than the
nylon, so there is less bulk to push down.

Subject: [HANASHIR:4787] GUITAR ADVICE

I am looking for some good advice to give to a parent of a 10-11 year
old who asks me what to buy the child in terms of a first guitar. Do
young students usually start with a nylon string folk type guitar?
That's what I did as an 11-yr-old, and only played steel strings when I
got older...but that approach might be passe these days! I'm interested
to know what ideas you all have to offer!
