The Miami Herald provides these details: http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/local/7985924.htm Posted on Thu, Feb. 19, 2004 IDA RUTH MEISELS Composed Jewish music BY JENNIFER MOONEY jmooney (at) herald(dot)com Ida Ruth Meisels, a renowned composer of Jewish music who regularly performed alongside her late husband Saul Meisels, a longtime cantor, died of complications from a respiratory infection Feb. 12 at an Aventura assisted living facility. She was 93. Throughout her career, Meisels focused on creating music that would be timeless and well-received by people of all ages. ''She knew that much of what she wrote would be possible for cantors, choirs and children to sing,'' recalled her daughter, Florence Nelson. ``She wanted to keep the music of Judaism alive.'' Ida Ruth Moskowitz was born and raised in New York City, where her music career came to life. A skilled pianist, she often accompanied cantors. It was later in life when she discovered her passion and talent for composing. ''Music was her life,'' Nelson said. ``It was her everything.' While attending an organ recital in 1933, she met Saul Meisels. The couple married two years later and immediately started performing together in various temples. The beautiful sounds that Saul Meisels sang were often those crafted by his wife. She is credited with writing, arranging and orchestrating more than 400 songs -- many of which have been performed by famous Jewish musicians, Nelson said. After spending many years in Cleveland, where Saul worked as the cantor of a temple, the couple moved to Miami in 1978. Together they performed at weekend Jewish services and cantorial recitals throughout the Miami area. In addition to her daughter Florence, Meisels is survived by a son, Samuel Meisels; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild; a brother, Sol Moss and a sister, Lillian Bleecker. Saul Meisels died in 1990. Donations may be sent to the Ida Ruth Meisels Scholarship Fund of the Cantors Assembly of America, 3080 Broadway, New York, N.Y., 10027. Services were held.
