*(Encore by Elliott Simon) - Pianist/composer/arranger IRVING FIELDS is
a musical treasure of NYC and one of the finest players you will come
across in New York's seemingly revitalizing hotel/society
room/cocktail/lounge jazz scene. Pianist Anthony Coleman acknowledges
and openly admits the influence Fields has played in his music and
beyond by saying, "He has a couple of perfectly played klezmer clarinet
riffs that function as signifiers...I've stolen them all. He's like
Ahmad Jamal - he just knows what will work on piano in a trio context
and what won't...The master!" The 89-year old is presently composing a
tribute, representing his 82nd album, and still plays regularly at the
East River Cafe three days a week!
