Musicologist Chana Mlotek To Be Honored at "Only in America" Conference

In the nearly three and a half decades since ethnomusicologists Joseph and 
Chana Mlotek have been tracking down information on Yiddish music for their 
column "Pearls of Yiddish Poetry," they have unearthed some very interesting 
stories.

Take, for example, the article they wrote about the well-known song "Yiddishe 
Mama," written in 1925 by Jack Yellen and Lew Pollack, which Sophie Tucker 
turned into a Top 5 hit in the U.S. in 1928.

Soon after the article was printed, they received a letter from a survivor of a 
World War II concentration camp. The survivor described an incident in the camp 
when a young boy sang "Yiddishe Mama" in the presence of a guard. The guard 
enjoyed the song so much that he gave all the inmates additional bowls of soup.

The Mloteks wrote about this incident in their column. Not long afterwards, 
they received another letter....
