A recent post said "I believe Irwin is referring to the 'Three Hebrew
Songs' based upon melodies of Isaac Nathan and further subtitled 'after
Lord Byron's Hebrew Melodies' for mixed chorus and full orchestra."
The Byron poetry and the music furnished to him by Isaac Nathan was the
subject of discussion in this ListServ just a few months ago, and resulted
in my buying a copy of the score (voice and piano) from another of the
members. There are considerably more than three - more than would be
performed in a recital of normal length, one song for each of the poems in
the Lord Byron collection. If given a couple of days to dig through a
very disorganized library and archives I could come up with the
publisher's name, etc. And if they were arranged for chorus and
orchestra, they merit further discussion.
The name Irving Berlin was mentioned in the same digest, and at the same
time I'm playing in a pit band for a USY production. I'm reminded of a
Kiddush by Kurt Weill, and I wonder if List members are familiar with
other Jewish music by composers more usually associated with Broadway:
Richard Rogers, Steven Sondheim et al.
