Traditional Klezmer Music
Klezmer music is the secular dance music of eastern European Jews. It is
instrumental music that developed out of the liturgical melodies sung by
cantors. These melodies were taken first by violinists, then by clarinetists,
infused with a driving danceable beat, and played at weddings, Bar Mitzvahs
and other important social functions. As infectious as the rhythm is, klezmer
music maintains a very close relation to its vocal roots. This is dance music
that sings! Tonight we will perform a variety of Klezmer music for you. So
sit back, relax. Let your mind drift back to a day, before radio, TV and
Microsoft. Close your eyes and remember the sounds of those old scratchy 78’
s.
