Khaveyrim,
I wanted to share this maykhele with you. I was speaking with an
elderly friend of mine, Mabel -- a violinist, who was telling me a story
about Molly Picon the other day. Mabel's father used to own a few
Yidish theaters here in Cleveland in the 1920s and on, and Mabel
remembers when Molly Picon came to play Yidl. Mabel was about 5 years
old then. She remembers sitting up front on her father's rolled up
overcoat and every night Molly would come out into the audience and walk
over to a gentleman, take his jacket sleeve button in her hand and ask,
"Di darfts dos knepl?" (Do you need this button?) If the man answered
"Neyn", she would yank it off the sleeve and run away. If he answered
"Yo", she would pull it off anyway and say, "Na!" (Here!) and put it in
his breast pocket and run away. The audience would roar. Isn't that
adorable? I can just picture it.
