"A Day in Paris ~ A Night in the Ukraine"
A recital featuring Tom Puwalski, clarinetist extraordinaire, in an evening
of Debussy, Saint-Saens, Poulenc and Klezmer!
Wednesday, October 2, 2002, 8:00 pm at the Gildenhorn Recital Hall, Clarise
Smith Perfomring Arts Center, University of Maryland, College Park. Free to
the public.
Tom Puwalski has traveled the world as Clarinet Soloist and Principal
Clarinetist for the United States Army Field Band. Prior to his military
service, Tom attended Manhattan School of Music, and the Philadelphia College
of the Performing Arts where he was a student of Leon Russianoff and Ignatius
Gennusa. Most recently, the Coastal Communities Concert Band of San Diego,
California, featuring Tom Puwalski, was awarded The Gold Prize at the 4th
Annual INTERNATIONAL ALPINE MUSIC FESTIVAL which was staged in Saas-Fee,
Switzerland in July, 200l. This coveted award has been presented to only two
bands in the past two years of the festival. Tom is also the author of
the recently released, "A Clarinetists Guide to Klezmer Music." It is
currently in its second printing.
During the classical music degment of the program, Tom will be accompanied by
Arno Drucker who has had a varied and distinctive musical career as a piano
soloist, chamber music and orchestral performer, teacher, and scholar. A
native of Philadelphia, his debut performance was with the Philadelphia
Orchestra at the age of 13. He has been a faculty member at numerous
colleges and universities including the Peabody Conservatory. He is a
recording artist for Orion Records and was the Principal Pianist of the
Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for over twenty years. In addition, he is the
author of, “American Piano Trios: A Resource Guide,” published by Scarecrow
Press. Arno Drucker has performed numerous times with Tom Puwalski, both in
recital and as featured performer with The Prevailing Winds. This recital
celebrates a musical relationship that has spaned a quarter century.
For the klezmer component of the program, Tom will be accompanied by members
of Lox & Vodka: Allen Puwalski, Accordion; Greg Pascuzzi, Piano; Dennis
Michaels, Bass.
