RE: nusach and selichot

I was privileged to listen to the Shabbaton Choir and cantors Lionel
Rosenfeld and Shimon Craimer in a beautiful Selichot service last night in a
packed Golders Green Synagogue. There must have been 600 women and 600 men
in their finery and hats listening with rapt attention to the beautifully
rendered and uplifting prayers.  The chief Rabbi also spoke movingly of
'forgiveness' .

It gave me a lot of pleasure, as it was the Jewish Music Institute (or the
Bnai Brith Jewish Music Festival as it then was) in 1986 that created the
Bnai Brith Festival Singers as a vehicle for the young graduate Stephen
Glass to make his arrangements for Jewish choral music. That year this new
choir under Stephen Glass presented a concert in the Jewish Music Festival
at London's Wigmore Hall, with Cantor Stephen Robins, and the first revival
of the tradition of a Choral Selichot Service at a wonderful Synagogue in
the East End of London.

This is the choir that, when Stephen Glass left for a position of Musical
Director of a major Synagogue in Montreal,  was taken over by Stephen Levey
as conductor and inspired by Cantor Lionel Rosenfeld to continue their
wonderful work. They specialise in making the prayers of the orthodox
Synagogue more uplifting and meaningful and presenting choral 'Shabbatons'
all over the country, often with the Chief Rabbi.  They became known as the
Shabbaton Choir.

Last night in London there were several Choral Selichot services all grown
from 1986 and its very pleasing to see what has grown and the inspiration it
is giving to many.
