new Osvaldo Golijov opera

The Boston Symphony Orchestra has commissioned a new chamber opera from
Osvaldo Golijov, which will be performed next August 10 (2003) at Tanglewood
with Dawn Upshaw as the lead vocalist.

According to a press release, Golijov describes his work as a "Middle
Eastern pieta," which "will deal with parents and the sacrifice of their
children, expressed through both Biblical and contemporary references."

Golijov's previous work includes "Yiddushbbuk," "La Pasion segun San
Marcos," "K'Vakarat" -- for string quartet and cantor, recorded by Kronos
Quartet -- and "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind," recorded by
Kronos with clarinetist David Krakauer.
