Yontef (Annie Lubin) 1948 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Tarras is the father of the Jewish-American tradition in Klezmer music. He was a composer, a clarinetist, a teacher and the leader of the orchestra, all in one. Dave Tarras was born in the Ukraine, in the village of Ternovka not far from the city of Teplic in 1897. Thanks to the lessons he received from his father, a trombone player, the boy was involved in music from his early childhood. At the age of 13 he performed quite successfully. In 1915, Tarras became famous all over Europe and received the name of the "King of Jewish Music". After immigrating to THE USA, he performed in all European capitals and established his own school of clarinet playing. He played salon pieces, jazz (swing) and, of cause, Jewish folk music. For a period of many years the musician collaborated with the most famous American and West European Jewish orchestras. Ultra orthodox Khasids didn't want to accept his musical experiments for a long time. But nevertheless he continued to play. Dave Tarras died at night in 1989 at the age of 87.
