Pete Rushefsky, Elie Rosenblatt & Rebecca Kaplan gave us a wonderful
afternoon of tsimbl and fydl, tsimbl and song, and tsimbl and piano
at Tonic 107 today.
All three have such feeling and drive in thier playing. Also several
awfully good original compositions were played.
Pete also does a great jobs of placing the instruments, the tunes,
and the personalities in context.
One ironic example - Pete was talking about the great Joseph Moskowitz, and
noted our proximity to Rivington Street where Moskowitz had his fabled wine
cellar where he played for years.
As I was leaving, I turned the corner onto Rivington, and saw that the
Shapiro wine cellar, one of the few old Jewish landmarks left in the
Lower East Side, was closed and had a for rent sign on it.
I can't complain, since I don't buy Shapiro, prefering instead to
(a) drink good wine and (b) buy my kosher wine from Israel. Still,
it was a bit of a zing to the heart.
Anyway, thank you Pete, Elle, and Rebecca for a great afternoon of music
and I - and obviously others - hope you'll be back soon!
