"state of klezmer" on klezmershack

The article I meant to write at the turn of the secular year is finally done.
For this year's "State of Klezmer" (suggesting the merest touch of puffery)
article, see http://www.klezmershack.com/articles/davidow/2002_stateofklez.html
. The article has to do mostly with the current edges in Jewish music, and with
changes in how we perceive cultural identity. I see fewer young people who
define themselves soley as "Jews" or even "Jewish-Americans," I say, but
rather, I seem to be seeing people who define themselves in a variety of ways
and contexts, less this or that, more "everything".

If anyone has comments, having read the article (please don't comment on my
brief summary--I know the summary doesn't do the article justice; I'm not sure
the article does the subject justice, but that's where I've put my effort.) I'd
love to see them, and participate in a discussion.

There's also a review of the extraordinary new album put out by the Jewish
Music Festival Folks, recording oldster, Arkady Gendler, at
http://www.klezmershack.com/bands/gendler/soroke/gendler.soroke.html and a
review by Peter Lippman of the recent CD release party celebrating Sandra
Layman's album, and the new Di Naye Kapelye disk--both among last year's best
(if you can believe the Klezmershack):
http://www.klezmershack.com/articles/2002_0126.lippman_layman.html

And, of course, the latest news on the KlezmerShack New service, there to the
right of the front page (and available to all interested websites).

Enjoy,
ari
