I should say that innovation is not the problem. Innovation is quite good
since it seems to bring people back to their roots in time. See they look
to see why they've arrived where they have.

Ok, so you got this really cool tune you've just heard. You want to teach
it to you buddies. You have to go to the root of the music before you
embellish it. You might find the chords, or just the melody or what every
your fancy is. Now add other musicians and a certain level of improv
happens.

To me, the essence of Klez is the essence of life thru the vehicle of
music. Life which is always changing, creating, growing, being born,
dying.... and yet we almost certainly have a need to come back to the our
roots in due time.

For many of us, definitely me, I've turned to Klez because it is my
roots. I also look forward to 'making it in my own image', and hopefully
listeners will still enjoy it.

As a little kid, my Uncle Ben played a Klez fiddle. At the time, I was
too young to realize the virtues of the music. I simply found it
sappy.... I think it had something to do w/ Uncle Ben's mediocre playing
and his over indulgence making the music too maudlin for this young
rocker. I started playing trombone at the age of 10. He would invite me
to play with him. I didn't connect. (Originally I learned violin. I had
the same lack of connection.) My one regret is that he died before I
could play with him with understanding. I suspect he'll forgive me.

There is a place for change, growth, creativity and returning home. The
important aspect is that it find our hearts along the line and continues
to hold us.

Besides, I really HATE cole slaw. This ginger stuff sounds good. I'ld
love to try it!
