Hi, all. I need to amplify on what Judith said a little bit. There are a
very small number of early Sephardic recordings by women. I am assuming
(correctly, Judith?) that La Gloria and Stella would be female performers.
(Note that Stella actually did Kol Nidrei!) Dates range from ca. 1907 to
ca. 1927:
Rosa, Mlle. Me Keres matar Mansevo Salonica
Mariette, Mlle Io so venido de Broussa Salonica
---
La Gloria Hymna de Zion Sarajevo
La Gloria Al rio de ma fuente Sarajevo
---
La Gloria Arvoles joran por luvjas Sarajevo
La Gloria Barone te vo azer Sarajevo
---
Stella Carselero i Piadoso Zagreb?
Stella Kol Nidrei Zagreb?
---
La Gloria Asenta te avlare Sarajevo
---
La Gloria Nocis nocis buenos nocis Sarajevo
---
La Gloria En kaze de tu padre Sarajevo
La Gloria Mis brasos kandelares Sarajevo
Of all these, I've only located copies of the first recording so far.
Of course, there are also non-commercial recordings of women. This is not
my bailiwick, but one such example is Zarita Nahon, recorded in NYC, 1929.
That tape is available from the library in whose collection the original
resides for singers or others needing to do research.
Hope this is a help!
