Voices: Continuity and Community
Gala opening concert of the Peretz Centre for Secular Jewish Culture
Saturday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m., Peretz Centre, 6184 Ash Street (at 45th
Avenue), Vancouver
The Peretz Centre will celebrate the offical opening of its new
facilities with a concert featuring vocalists Claire Klein Osipov,
Grace Chan, Marcus Mosely and Stephen Aberle. Under the artistic
direction of, and with accompaniment by Wendy B. Stuart, the soloists
will perform favourite selections from their own diverse repertoire,
as well as ensemble pieces specially arranged for this concert.
With the theme, Voices : Continuity & Community, the program will
give expression to the rich tradition of Jewish music while
recognizing the myriad influences that are embraced by the Peretz
Centre's philosophy of mentshlikhkayt and cultural awareness. A newly
commissioned work with music and lyrics by Vancouver composer Joan
Beckow will have its premiere at the gala.
The program will open with a welcome to the audience performed by the
Vancouver Jewish Folk Choir. Among the well-known instrumentalists
performing will be clarinetist Mike Braverman, violinist Katherine
Headrick and the jazz ensemble the Saul Berson Quartet. The concert
will serve as a tribute to the effort and determination to create a
Vancouver Peretz Centre for the 21st century.
Wendy B. Stuart (artistic Direction, arrangements and piano) has made
several recordings, including the soon-to-be-released "Zing un lern
Yidish."
Claire Klein Osipov (voice) has a musical career that spans more than
50 years as a performer, recording artist and media personality. She
is widely recognized as Canada's premier interpreter of Yiddish song,
performing both locally and on tour in Canada and the United States.
Stephen Aberle (voice) has appeared as both an actor and singer in
theatres locally and across Canada. He is a member and soloist in the
Vancouver Jewish Folk Choir.
Saul Berson Quartet -- Saul Berson (saxophone) has created an
eclectic mix of music, incorporating Middle Eastern overtones with a
pinch of Piazzolla! The group follows an original path that
encompasses a broad range of styles. It's music that "creates an
intense set of Arabian rhythms and...is a delirious mess of tango and
klezmer" (Cadence). With Kim Darwin (accordion), Tony Wilson (guitar)
and Paul Blaney (bass).
Michael Braverman (clarinet) is the musical director of Olam and a
highly acclaimed jazz musician. He was the recipient of a Canada
Council award for further studies in New York and Israel.
Joan Beckow (composition) is a composer and lyricist whose career has
spanned Hollywood, Broadway and British Columbia. She is frequently
commissioned to create pieces for festivals and performances, and her
work will be featured exclusively in "It's All in the Song" in the
2002 Chutzpah! Festival at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater
Vancouver.
