We just received 2 great CDs. The first if by Cantor Shmuel Barzilai with the
Vienna Boys Choir performing the compositions of Salomon Sulzer. the second
selection, "Tsimbl un Fidl: Klezmer Music for Hammered Dulcimer & Violin" is
by (list member) Peter Rushefsky & Elie Rosenblatt.
1) "Synagogue Compositions - Salomon Sulzer (1804-1890) by Cantor Shmuel
Barzilai and The Vienna Boys' Choir with The Chorus Viennensis. $17.98
19 selections for Shabbat, High Holidays, Festivals and other occasions.
Included is the "Tov L'hodot (psalm 92) composed by Franz Schubert at
Sulzer's suggestion.
>From the Booklet: This CD has 2 distinctive characteristics. For the first
time, Sulzer's compositions can be heard in the original version and, for the
first time in its history, the Vienna Boys' Choir is interpreting synagogue
music, joining forces with the Chorus Viennensis... Sulzer's collection of
'Shir Zion' (compositions covering the entire liturgical year) is one of the
most important musical achievements of the 19th Century. Sulzer's
compositions and their scoring for
a capella boy's voices and male voice choir were to exercise a lasting
influence throughout the world and have won a firm place in worship to the
present day.
Cantor Shmuel Barzilai was born in Jerusalem and is the Chief Cantor of
Vienna's Jewish Community. He studied under Moshe Stern and Naftali Herstik
and performs in concert throughout the world.
2) "Tsimbl Un Fidl: Klezmer Music for Hammered dulcimer & Violin"- Pete
Rushefsky and Elie Rosenblatt. $15.98
These two talented musicians met at KlezKanada, "and the rest is history."
Though the clarinet is still considered "thee" Klezmer instrument, recordings
such as this one and those of Josh Horowitz, ("Mameloshen", Wedding Without A
Bride), The Chicago Klezmer Ensemble,"Home Sweet Bukovina) etc, have
reintroduced the Tsimbal to the Klezmer listening audience.
Containing 18 selections, each tune is credited to the "original" recorded
version or transcription used as source material for this CD dating back to
the first 2 decades of the 20th Century.
These CDs are now available at Hatikavh Music
