just read an interview with Sokolow about klezmer in the Catskills on Ari's
site. http://www.klezmershack.com/contacts/klezwords.html#catskills. It's
incredible -- Sokolow remembers everything, and he is, to put it mildly,
really hilarious. The interview reads like some wacky, but savvy, old jazz
guy reminiscing about his days on 42nd St. A Ken Burns documentary, but
with a Yiddish inflection. Sokolow -- turn the guy on, and the stuff
(whatever) spills out.
Did I miss this interview when it was first posted? Phil Brown interviewed
Sokolow in Dec. '99.
One thing I learned: Billy Hodes, comedian of "Essen" renown, is still
alive (as of Dec. '99).
