Venetian Jews

Chevra,

My brother quotes from "While the Candles Burn: Eight Stories for
Hanukkah," Barbara Diamond
Goldin:

"In old Venice where many of the streets are actually canals of water,
families would get into gondolas on the last night and stop in front of each
house where there was a Hanukkah lamp to call out greetings and sing
Hanukkah melodies."

He would like to know any or all of the following:

When was this? Are there more details? Which melodies? In which
language? Was this in the Jewish Quarter?

Any help welcome!!

Best,

Joel
