Re: JEWISH-MUSIC digest 1757

In response to Tina Fruehauf's question, the authority on Hungarian jewish
religious music is Prof. Judit Frigyesi, who is presently spending a year as a
member of the Kollegium Budapest faculty in Budapest. E-mail me off line at
<zaelic (at) elender(dot)hu> or <zaelic (at) hotmail(dot)com> and I can put you
in touch with
her. In the US, cantor Yankl Falk has done a lot of work among older chazzans
in Hungary, and Perele Gluck in New York knows the Satmar traditions inside
out. Vera Szabo at Stanford University is well versed in Hungarian yiddish
traditions, especially those of Sziget/Maramures, and has worked with a
Maramures 'mashalinke' in New York as well.

Incidentally, if you are in the New York area, most of Di Naye Kapelye (with
help from friends and palinka) will be playing at the Tonic on the afternoon of
Dec. 31 (as well as the Arbeter Ring on Dec. 28, but this is as yet
unconfirmed). We will be presenting a lot of new stuff that is Jewish fiddle
repetoire from Maramures that we collected this year, quite different from the
music presented by Muzsikas on their own wonderful CD.
