RE: Israelis and Klezmer--& the request

Alright, already! Obviously, just as I thought the original inquiry
inappropriate, some people thought my response was inappropriate. I'm too
much of a polemicist about (I think) important matters, and the times are,
unhappily, so rife with them, that I'm glad to just retreat on this. Let
others help as they wish.

The reason for my original response was simply that as a creative person, I
could never imagine addressing such an inquiry, which sounded to me roughly
like, "I want to write a novel. Does anybody have any ideas of good things
to write about?"

Then again, keeping in mind the aptly written response that invoked the four
sons in the Haggada--which I intend to ponder, and keep in mind--I suppose
there's a place for all questions; though of course the question might
remain which belong on this list. I think my real issue was that if anyone
had asked me to share such an inquiry, I would have tried to help the
questioner focus and refine and think through what he wanted to do: What
kind of story? To express/convey/illuminate what aspects of Jewish life?
W/ what intersection w/ or connection to klezmer music, which was left
totally unclear, yes? I think a more thoughtfully written and elaborated
query would have done the inquirer, the potential project, and the list more
justice.

As for the filmmaker, I didn't even know his name, don't for a moment
question his good nature and character, and was specfically advised that
he's _not_ on this list and so wouldn't read my brief note.

But for those _on_ the list who were bothered by my response, I defer to
your own judgment as to an appropriate response. Let's leave it be.
