Fall 2000 Yiddish Happenings
At the Workmen's Circle

CLASSES:
Beginning Yiddish
This class will cover the Yiddish alphabet, reading and writing skills,
conversation and elementary grammar. No previous background necessary. The
class will incorporate Yiddish music.
12 Wednesday evenings, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., starting September20 (9/20, 9/27,
10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, 11/15, 11/22, 11/29, 12/6).
Instructor: Ellie Kellman teaches Yiddish language and literature at
Brandeis University. She received her training in the Yiddish Studies
Program at Columbia University and has also taught at Columbia University,
the YIVO Institute, the University of Toronto
and the New York Workmen's Circle.
Intermediate Yiddish
This class will begin with a review of basic Yiddish grammar, reading,
writing and conversation skills. Using short texts, film and music, the
course will go on to more advanced language skills. Students must have
completed Beginning Yiddish, or the equivalent and must have basic reading
and writing skills. 12 Wednesday evenings , 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., starting
September 20 (9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1,11/8, 11/15, 12/6,
12/13, 12/20). Instructor: Daniella HarPaz has taught Yiddish at both the
University of Michigan and Brandeis University and has taught at the Workmen
's Circle for several years.
Advanced Yiddish
This is a reading circle and conversation class for those with previous
experience reading and dialoguing in Yiddish. Materials will include poetry,
songs, and excerpts from Yiddish classics. Discussions will
be structured around the readings, designed to strengthen grammar,
vocabulary, and idiomatic expression. 12 Wednesday evenings , 7:30 - 9:00
p.m., starting September 20 (9/20, 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1,
11/8, 11/15, 11/29, 12/6, 12/13) Instructor: Lillian Leavitt is a native
Yiddish speaker and has taught at the Workmen's Circle for several years.
OTHER YIDDISH HAPPENINGS - Free & open to the public
Informal Yiddish ativities:. In the past few months, we've gone to the zoo,
hiked the blue hills and had a picnic on the banks of the Charles River.
