I took a look at the website - seems most departments sport a "more to
come" type of sparse description.
Sounds like they want to amass a collection of records, sheet music and
memorabilia that will never see the light of day again! What exactly IS
"safekeeping" (their words)?
I've offered something along the same lines to seniors and other folks
for a while now, but, I believe, with more benefit to the original
record owner. Lots of seniors have stacks of Jewish 78s that they can't
play anymore - I offer to transfer their collections to CD or cassette
format, (for free, of course), with a few copies made for them to give
out to family members. I clean up the records as best I can on the
computer, and I use the right type of stylus for the transfer. I
accumulate more Jewish records in my archive (Esther Leibovitz Archive
of Jewish Sound Recordings) and the original owners get to enjoy them in
a more compact improved format and share the music with others.
My archive gets used by Martin van de Ven's Klezmer Orchestra in Toronto
- they peruse the archive for original versions of tunes to play.
Anyway, the above is MY definition of "safekeeping".
Best Regards,
Steven
