Strauss/Warschauer Duo to Perform and Teach in Washington, DC

Unique Klezmer Workshop and Concert
with the Strauss/Warschauer Duo
at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington
6125 Montrose Road
Rockville, Maryland
Sunday, June 11
Workshop 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Concert 8:00 pm

Internationally renowned klezmer musicians Deborah Strauss and Jeff
Warschauer will visit the Washington area June 11 to teach and perform
klezmer music.

The duo invites players of all ages and all instruments to attend a klezmer
workshop to be held at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington in
Rockville, MD, from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. Violin, clarinet, guitar, saxophone,
flute, trombone, accordion, drums -- players of any instrument are welcome to
join in an afternoon of excellent instruction in the lively art of klezmer
ensemble.

The workshop is geared to intermediate and advanced instrumentalists, but no
prior experience with klezmer music is required. Those who have never played
a note of klezmer music and want to learn, as well as those who have
experience and want to perfect their style with tips from two master
performers, are equally welcome to come and join in the klezmer revival.

The Duo will perform a concert, "In My Garden: Yiddish Songs and Music of
Love and Rejoicing," the same evening at 8:00 p.m. at the JCC.

The Duo's extraordinary sound ranges from delicate and refined to exuberant
and foot-stomping as they perform songs and klezmer melodies celebrating
family, nature, and community, along with spiritual and romantic love.

The New York Times calls them "terrific" and Gazeta Wyborcza (Poland) says
"phenomenal."

Klezmer, the traditional music of Eastern European Jews, is currently
undergoing an explosive revitalization, with numerous contemporary klezmer
bands reaching increasingly large audiences. In workshops in New York and
Canada, Strauss and Warschauer have used innovative and inspiring teaching
techniques to impart vintage melodies, rhythms, and stylistic ornaments to
their students. The June 11 workshop will be the first of its kind in the
Washington area.

Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer are premier klezmer performers and
educators. Deborah is a member of the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble, and studied
ethnomusicology at the University of Chicago. Jeff is known internationally
as a klezmer mandolin and guitar player and as an expressive Yiddish singer.
In addition to their work as a duo, they are members of the Klezmer
Conservatory Band and have appeared on film and in concert with violinist
Itzhak Perlman.

The workshop is limited to 30 participants. The fee is $30 for those who
register by June 1; $40 thereafter. Students and senior citizens pay
half-price. Auditors are welcome for $5. To register, call Ellen Cassedy at
301-565-0006 (or e-mail cassblum (at) aol(dot)com) or call Marta Wassertzug at

Concert tickets are $15 at the door ($12 for students, seniors, and members
of sponsoring organizations).

Sponsors of the workshop and concert are Yiddish of Greater Washington, the
Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, and the District of Columbia
Jewish Community Center.
