Subject: Special Jewish Music Interests
My objective in making this list was for us to appreciate that even
though we all have a common interest in "Jewish music", many of us are
especially attracted to different aspects of Jewish music. I do not
intend for this list to be used as a resource by others (e.g., please
do not ask us to violate Jewish and copyright law by copying our
recordings). However, all of those named below have been quite
generous in sharing their knowledge with the list and several of us do
so professionally as well in presentations, performances, or writings.
That said, here is a revised list of special interests based on
responses received. If you would like to be added/deleted or have
this information changed please write to me directly or by way of the
list.
Bob: classical
Eliott: liturgical choral (am I right Eliott?)
George: jazz
Gideon: rock
Haim: Israeli folk dance
Hayyim: rock (Leonard Cohen)
Hankus: Yiddish
Helen: klezmer dance, Israeli dance
Henry: klezmer
Ingemar: jazz (correct Ingemar?)
Isabelle: Sephardic (CDs and cassettes)
Itzik: Yiddish
Jerzy: Polish
Joel: everything Ladino
Josh: early European klezmer
Judah: early music
Judith: Ladino (field recordings)
Marvin: klezmer
Paul: early European klezmer
Reyzl: Yiddish (78s and LPs); Yiddish music books
Robert: communal/folk liturgical song
Seth: contemporary klezmer
Simon: everything (what doesn't he have?)
Winston: liturgical
Wolf: predominantly Yiddish, oddball
Several of us have wide-ranging collections (e.g. George). I tried to
list our special interests. For example, although my own collection
is quite eclectic, it does include over 100 recordings and videos on
the story of Noah and the Flood (and more than twice as many on the
Creation). Some of us may even have collected multiple recordings of
a particular song (e.g., Havah Nagilah) or prayer or performer.
I will keep this list on file and try to keep it up-to-date. I hope
that it has been fun for the list members to see it and the responses.
