the following exciting event that I am co-coordinating.  I am listing
only those sessions with significant Jewish music content.  For a
complete listing (over 1 dozen wonderful choices including sessions on
Yiddish, calligraphy, challah baking, Talmud, Torah) or any additional

FIRST SESSION - 8:00 - 8:45 p.m.


JEWISH POP CULTURE:
1920?s THEATRE AND FILM ABOUT JEWS
As Jews began to acculturate into American society in the interwar
years, the depiction of Jews on stage and screen began to change. We
will discuss "Abie's Irish Rose," "His People," "The Jazz Singer,"
"Whoopee," and "The Bronx Express" and view film clips to illustrate
shifting attitudes toward Jews on the part of both Jews and Gentiles
in American society.
Edward Merwin is a Ph.D. student in Theatre at the CUNY Graduate
School.  He is writing a dissertation on Jewish ethnicity in 1920?s
vaudeville, theatre, and film.


SECOND SESSION - 9:00 - 9:45 p.m.



THIRD SESSION - 10:00 - 10:45 p.m.


FASCINATIN' RHYTHM:
THE MUSICALITY OF THE HEBREW LANGUAGE
Come investigate the relationship of Hebrew to synagogue music. The
many variations of pronunciation and accentuation, and the influence
of geographic origin on musical style will be illustrated by
recordings.
Gordon Piltch has been hazzan at CSAIR for the past twenty years. He
has an abiding interest in the dialectical pronunciations of Hebrew
and the ingenuity of Jewish synagogue music from around the world.


10:45 to 11:30 p.m. Social Hall

Socialize and enjoy elegant refreshments.
Israeli folk dancing with instruction led by Miriam Westheimer.
