Metropolitan Klezmer+Sharqija: Tues, Feb 1@Fez, NYC!



Experience two exuberant & eclectic groups as Metropolitan Klezmer and 
Sharqija take the stage Tuesday, Feb 1, 2000 at Fez under Time Cafe.  
Metropolitan Klezmer appears at 8pm, followed by Sharqija playing a 9:15pm 
set.   This exhilarating double bill is two wild rides for the price of one, 
$10 for both bands in the lush setting of FEZ nightclub, 380 Lafayette St at 
Great Jones (E. 3rd St), NYC.   Fabulous food & drink available.  FEZ info &

METROPOLITAN KLEZMER?s imaginative mix of styles journeys all over the 
far-flung map of Yiddish culture, exploring dance, trance, labor song, 
lullaby, tango, and vintage soundtrack material with both irreverence and 
respect.  With music from MetroKlezmer?s upcoming second CD (plus old 
favorites from their award-winning debut disc, ?Yiddish For Travelers?. )  
The eclectically elegant =SHARQIJA= ['East'] performs ?Music From The Silk 
Road,? tunes from the Balkans to Near East and beyond on a dazzling array of 
instrumentation. Sharqija?s players include members of Pharaoh?s Daughter, 
Paradox Trio, and Metropolitan Klezmer, creating breathtakingly beautiful 
songs and displays of dance.  A pair of New York?s widest-ranging bands, 
together again by popular demand!

Metropolitan Klezmer is led by Eve Sicular (drums), featuring Ismail Butera 
(accordion), Steve Elson (clarinet/sax), Pam Fleming (trumpet/flugelhorn), 
Michael Hess (viola/ney flutes/kanun), Dave Hofstra (bass/tuba), Deborah

Sharqija?s all-star line-up features leader Ismail Butera (accordion, kashkar 
rabab, saz,  & vocals) and Harris Wulfson (violin) of Metropolitan Klezmer, 
with Basya Schechter (oud, guitar, & vocals) of Pharaoh's Daughter, 
percussionist Seido Salifoski (dumbeq, daire, & tapan) of Paradox Trio, and 
Sprocket Royer (bass).   Special guest Michael Hess  on kanun [Middle Eastern 
zither].
