Margot was really great last night -- her orchestrations, her band (Jim
Guttman, Mimi Rabson, Dave Harris, Grant Smith, Evan Harlan) and her own
playing. Deep, really well-balanced. I thought the first set was better
than the second, mainly because Mimi played the first set and not the second.
That allowed Dave to play great trombone parts in the first set, while Mimi
played incredible melodic and rhythmic lines along with Margot. I believe
that Margot set out to pay tribute to the greats, and I think she has done a
fine job -- in both representing their styles and their work truly and also
putting her own mark on the reperatoire.
I recommend that people go hear them play when and if that happens again, and
I also highly recommend her new CD. Brava!
