Re: Giacobo Basevi Detto Cervetto

Basevi is the name of a Livornese (Sephardi) family. I'm away from my
books now (and will be for the next month), and cannot give any more
references, but another Basevi (Abraham?) was a renown Florentine
musicologist of Livornese origins, from the 19th century: he wrote
the first study on Giuseppe Verdi's music... The Basevis were a
musical family, very involved in classical music. Vittorio Basevi, a
cellist, is now based in Milano, while some Basevis live now in
Verona.
The fact that a Basevi was active in London is not surprising,
considering that Sephardi cantors from Livorno (Leghorn) have been
very active all over the Sephardi communities throughout the world.
Unfortunately, I do not know anything about Giacobo (or Giacomo? this
is the standard Italian for Jacob-Yaakov).
