The pieces on Hungry Hearts, the sixth CD production in Rita Ottens and
Joel Rubin's Jewish Music Series for Schott Music and Media's Wergo label,
were recorded in 1986 and 1988 in New York and Berkeley. Originally
released as an audio cassette under the title Brave Old World, Hungry
Hearts is a document of the spirit of cultural awakening, joy and vitality
which characterized the first decade of the American Yiddish Revival. In
the Joel Rubin Klezmer Band, American clarinetist and ethnomusicologist
Rubin brought together present and former members of Kapelye, The Klezmorim
and the Klezmer Conservatory Band to create the first "all-star Klezmer
Band", as one critic wrote enthusiastically at that time. With this group,
from which he later formed Brave Old World, Rubin concentrated exclusively
on the classic American-Yiddish clarinet solos of the 1920s using a typical
instrumentation of solo clarinet, piano, string bass, violin and trombone.
In addition, pianist and jazz composer Lisa Rose, Rubin's partner from
1982-1985 in the duo The Old Country, can be heard as guest tsimbalist on
two pieces. With the magical expressive quality of Rubin's clarinet and the
jazzy verve of the accompaniment, these performances generate an atmosphere
which makes Hungry Hearts one of the most beautiful recordings of Eastern
European Jewish instrumental music to date.
