Need Help-Jewish Partisan Songs From WWII

Dear Friends,

I received the following letter from a friend on Choralist that I would like
to open up to our list's collective wisdom. Here is the letter:
>Does anyone know about any compilations of WW2 resistance songs?
Probably in Yiddish, some may be in the native language?

Other Jewish folk songs of this period would be of interest as well.

I wrote the following reply to Paul:
>Hi Paul,

Challenging question. The songs you are looking for are somtimes called
"Partisan" songs from WWII or the Holocaust. But there are also earlier
Israeli "partisan" songs as well (resistance against the British occupation),
so be advised. The best collection of Yiddish songs from the '30s and '40s
period that I know of is:
_Yes, We Sang! Songs of the Ghettos and Concentration Camps
Edited by Shoshana Kaslisch with Barbara Meister (Harper and Row)

Others in my library include:
_The Yiddish songbook_ Edited by Jerry silverman (Stein and Day) has a set of
songs from the Holocaust.

_A Treasury of Yiddish Folksong_ Edited by Ruth Rubin (Schocken) has a set of
four WWII Partisan songs-this may be exactly what you are looking for.
"Partizaner Lid" and "Zog Nit Keynmol" are two of the most famous.

_Mir Trogn a Gesang: The New Book of Yiddish songs_ Edited by Eleanor Gordon
Mlotek (Workmen's Circle Education Department) has a large selection of
wonderful songs in the "folk style" by the Polish composer Mordechai Gebirtig,
who perished in the Holocaust.

With your permission, I'll post your question to the Jewish Music list and see
what comes up. Let me know.

Hope this helps.

By the way, the best source for Judaica including music is:

Well Listers-do you have some recommendations for Paul Sinasohn that I could
pass on to him. Please respond to me privately, I'll submit a compilation to
the list. Thanks in advance.

Best wishes,
Steve
