I just read Paul Giffords fine letter about Hungarian and Romanian
music. This and a recent stay in Berlin made me remember the recent
discussion in the list about clarinets and trumpets in klezmer music.
I just want to tell you about a new CD, I bought in Berlin. It is
published by PIRANHA >www.piranha.de< (they publish among others
Klezmatics in Europe). It´s recorded 1997 in Bucarest and was released
in Berlin just recently.
The CD is called "Fanfare Ciocarlia. Radio Pasçani".
A brass ensemble of 11 Romany gypsy musicians plays Doinas, Horas and
more. It is mostly very fast and unpolished music with trumpets playing
unison with clarinets.
The discussion in the list about clarinets in klezmer music crawled into
talks about trumpets not being able to play with the speed and agility
of clarinets. These Romany village musicians certainly can.
Although it is not jewish music, I sincerely recommend it to members of
the list.
