Jewish Ethnic Dance Programs
Commemorating the 100th Birthday
of the Mother of Israeli Dance
Labor Day Weekend August 30 - September 1, 1997
Dance workshops, performances and parties are scheduled to commemorate the
100th birthday of Gurit Kadman (1887-1987), recipient of the prestigious
Israel Prize as the mother of the Israeli folk dance movement and for her
contributions to the preservation of ethnic culture in Israel. The
programs will take place on Labor Day weekend starting Saturday evening
August 30 through Monday night September 1 at the West Side Institutional
Synagogue 120 W. 76 St. in New York City. A focus on Jewish ethnic dance
will be featured as part of the 6th annual SHORASHIM--Roots of Israeli
Dance weekend. SHORASHIM means roots in Hebrew and is sponsored by the
Rikuday Dor Rishon dancers, who meet Sunday nights at Town & Village
Synagogue in Manhattan where they preserve and perpetuate the classic folk
dances of Israel.
Workshop leaders include Ayalah Goren-Kadman, one of Israel's experts in
folk and ethnic dance from Jerusalem's Rubin Academy and the daughter of
Gurit Kadman. She will provide the background on ethnic dance in Israel
and teach dances of the Kurdish Jews as well as classic Israeli folk
dances. A workshop on Yemenite movement will be presented by Hadassah
Badoch-Kruger, former principal soloist of the Inbal Dance Theater and the
Batsheva Dance Company. Women's Hasidic dances will be taught by
ethnographer Jill Gellerman, who is an expert in this style of dance. The
Eastern European dance segment will conclude with a klezmer band and
dancing led by the internationally acclaimed Michael Alpert, who brought
Klezmer to national television in his appearance on the David Letterman
Show and in his PBS documentary, "In the Fiddler's House" featuring Izhak
Perlman. Dances from different parts of the Sephardic (Spanish Jewish)
world--including Morocco and the Balkans-- will be presented by Judith
Brin Ingber, the Director of the Voices of Sepharad ensemble. A workshop
on the dances of the Bukharan Jews from Central Asia will be offered by
the Shashmaqam ensemble, which will also perform. A workshop on Israeli
folk dances influenced by Jewish ethnic styles will be taught by Danny
Pollock, a popular folk dance teacher and performer in the New York area.
Israeli folk dance parties, including some teaching, are scheduled every
night, featuring well-known guest DJ's from the U.S. and Israel.
All inclusive rates for the whole program are $60 in advance and &70 at
the door, space permitting. Special teen rates are $40 and pre-teens are
half price. Admission to the afternoon workshops are $25 and evening
