Joel Rubin, the "most virtuosic klezmer clarinetist in the world today"
(Dr. Eleonore Buening, Southern German Radio), introduces with Beregovski's
Khasene his celebrated Jewish Music Ensemble, the only group dedicated
exclusively to interpreting the repertoire of the 'Golden Age' of Eastern
European Jewish instrumental music. Beregovski's Khasene is the first
program ever devoted to Ukrainian-Jewish ethnomusicologist Moyshe
Beregovski's definitive collection of Eastern European Jewish music, and
many of these pieces have not been performed since they were compiled over
sixty years ago. In addition to the wizardry of Italian master accordionist
Claudio Jacomucci and the charismatic cimbalom virtuoso Kalman Balogh -
scion of one of Hungary's most famous Rom musical dynasties - the recording
features Laszlo Major, Ferenc Kovacs and Csaba Novak from Budapest, who
bring their extensive experience with various styles of traditional Eastern
European music to the ensemble. The art of the Joel Rubin Jewish Music
Ensemble unveils the magical character of this music which marks the most
vital life-cycle ritual of the Jewish people: the wedding. With their
highly stylized interpretations of majestic wedding processions, bridal
laments, exuberant dances and contemplative table songs, these six
outstanding musicians evoke the haunting beauty of centuries of Eastern
European Jewish life and culture. A work of art and at the same time a
moving historical document, Beregovski's Khasene by the Joel Rubin Jewish
Music Ensemble represents a landmark: the birth of a uniquely and
distinctly Jewish voice within contemporary music.
