Texts for songs

I am a composer and would like to write a set of songs based on European
Jewish poetry, folk songs, etc. I have in mind texts in Yiddish, Hebrew,
German, and I hope to find some poetry or folk song texts that would
reflect life in a typical shtetl of the 19th century.

I am not particularly interested in traditional melodies because I want to
compose from "scratch", without preconcieved melodic ideas.

If anyone on this newsgroup has some ideas of where I could find such
songs and poetry, please let me know.
