I am currently researching the life and work of Samuel Alman. I
know enough on his life to fill a five page paper, and I want to gather
more data on his music and his relations to the Zionist movement and the
political scene in London.
Alman was born in Russian and came to London when he was in his
late twenties. He had formal musical education from both the Kishinev
conservatory and the Royal Conservatory in London. He wrote operas and
two books of Synagogue music, which he used in the years he directed the
choir of the Hampstead Synagogue. Besides his synagogue music, he wrote
Yiddish Lieder and several articles on music and other chazanim and
Jewish musicians.
I know he was active in the political life of the Zionist
movement, but I would like to know to what extent. I also would like to
compile a bibliography of articles and books written by him. IF ANYBODY
OUT THERE COULD HELP ME I WOULD BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.
p.s.- and if you like, I would share the rest of the research with you.
Thank you all, Chag Sameach.
