The importance of academic training for studio musicians can not be denied.
To be able to sight read, transpose whil sight reading, etc. is what makes
these folks musician's musicians. But let us not forget that some of the
most inspiring music from around the world came from relatively untrained
sources. Especially if we look at how music or chant is incorporated into
Jewish Culture. Not every great Chazan (Cantor) went to Juliard. And some of
the fine music to come from the Chabad movement did not eminate from
musically trained people, sometimes it was just someone with a good ear for
a hook!
