I just got an advance copy of Shirim Klezmer's new tape,
"naftule's dream". So far I've only heard the first side.
It has:
Side A:
1. Sha Shtill (trad.)
2. Naftule's Dream (Glenn Dickson)
3. Kum aher du filosof (trad)
4. Az men fort kayn Sevastopol (trad)
5. Waiting (GD)
6. Nokh a gleyzl wein (trad)
Side B:
1. Vus can you makh (theater)
2. Oy, dortn, dortn, ivern vaserl (trad)
3. Seams (GD)
4. Silver Wedding (trad)
5. National Hora (trad)
6. Tumba, Tumba (trad)
7. Moldavian Tanz (trad)
Personnel:
Glenn Dickson - clarinet
Betty Silberman - vocals
David Harris - trombone, dumbek
Maury Rosenberg - piano & accordion
Jim Gray - tuba
Alan Hall - drums
My notes:
A1: good vocals
A2: in the doina tradition -- starts with a slow clarinet solo,
goes to an up-tempo, freylach-style number
A3: a good dreamy version of this -- I really like the vocals
A4: this is about the town of Jampolye, on the way to Sevastopol,
where the Jews were farmers as well as merchants; sort of
"yes we can be halutzim", before the halutzim; it's a good
up-tempo tune
A5: this is a tsiftatelli or a turkisher -- very middle-eastern
sounding; it has lots of layers of texture. It's my favorite
number on the tape so far. Good stuff.
A6: This one really wails -- it's a fast freylach with amazing
rhythms and an impressive tuba solo.
The tape is available by mail order for $10 from
Glenn Dickson
13 Maple Circle

The tape (and a CD of the same music) will be released in a couple
of months.
disclaimer -- I play in the amateur band that Glenn leads at the local
JCC but am not associated with Shirim.
