Friends of Jewish Music 1992-93 Season
- From: Max Stern 310-524-6152 <lms...>
- Subject: Friends of Jewish Music 1992-93 Season
- Date: Mon 09 Nov 1992 18.54 (GMT)
Here, as promised a month ago, is the detailed schedule for the 1992-93
season of Friends of Jewish Music, featuring the Kol Echad Chorale.
Kol Echad is a Southern California community-based chorus which sees
itself as the premier Jewish choral group in the west. We sing
exclusively Jewish music, from Renaissance (Salomone Rossi) to
contemporary (Tzvi Avni, Mordecai Seter) and everything in between
(Levandowski, Bloch, Bernstein). We sing in Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian,
Ladino, and English. We sing very serious music, and very popular
(Sheyn Vi Di Livone, Bei Mir Bist du Schoen, Rozhinkes mit Mandlen).
We sing liturgical music and secular. In each season, we sing two
performances each of two or three major concerts with full orchestra,
and we sing a number of "smaller" concerts, usually with piano
accompaniment. We are also "chorus in residence" at the University of
Judaism. And we are the chorus of Friends of Jewish music, which is
now sponsoring its seventh season of concerts.
Incidentally, if you are a choral singer, it is not to late to try out
for Kol Echad. If you are interested, contact me by email or phone:
(310) 524-6152 or (818) 501-3470; or contact the director, Alan Weiner,
directly at (714) 552-7654.

Frank,* and received the Jewish Music Commission Award. Our

Cantor, Jazz Sextet, Adult and Children's Choirs, and will be performed

Shulamis
Yiddish Operetta
The romantic operetta *Shulamis* was written in 1880 by Abraham
Goldfaden, the Father of the Yiddish Theater. We present this rare
revival of one of his greatest works with songs sung in the original
Yiddish, but with dialogue in English Translation. Goldfaden's musical
style derives from synagogue chant, folk song, and French and Italian
opera. The song "Rozhinkes mit Mandlen," one of over twenty musical
numbers in *Shulamis,* has earned a lasting place in Jewish folklore.

Craig Taubman in concert!
Few have succeeded in incorporating mainstream pop-rock into Jewish
music, but Craig Taubman does so with steaming high energy from
beginning to end. His music is fun and full of enthusiasm for life,
while conveying a powerful message of Jewish and universal values. His
songs are widely used in synagogues, homes, camps, and schools.
Recently signed to Disney Records, Craig is now reaching thousands of
new fans. Bring your kids -- the future is here!
