Hi,
I have been following the list and finally have the time to
introduce myself. I am not Jewish, but you might find that
hard to believe if you saw my books, records etc.
I got in touch with Israeli music first in the 70s, then
got to know Yiddish folk songs, then Sephardic songs and
then Klezmer.
About Israeli music I am most familiar with the popular music
of the seventies. I used to like Yehoram Gaon a lot, but I don't
really appreciate much that I have heard from him lately.
I am interested in the oriental style (Haim Moshe, Samir Shukry
(is he Jewish?) etc.). On the other hand I like Matti Caspi a
lot (I have the four sides and One to one) and I wish I could
write songs like his.
Many of the Israeli names mentioned here don't say anything to
me. I live in Finland where we don't see Israeli music in the stores
except for occasional compilations.
We do have, on the other hand, an excellent world music store which
among other thing keeps us supplied with klezmer (some occasional
sephardic stuff as well). I like klezmer, but don't want to listen
too much of it. Both traditional and experimental is OK, when it sounds
good. I like Yiddish songs, so for me it is all right when a klezmer
band makes use of some singing. I listen to Yiddish songs from folk
through Barry Sisters to Partisans of Vilna.
Some sephardic songs are really moving (something like Shecharchoret/
Morenica, and one that I have recently heard called Adios Querida).
I got the idea somewhere that somebody is playing sephardic music
in a modern way and that would be interesting to hear.
Last but not least, I discovered Mordechai ben David a few years ago
in a Judaica store in London. I have lots of his tapes and CDs
now and some of the stuff is really moving and full of feeling. I know
this sounds really odd for a goy to say, though.
I do also have an active interest in music (not balanced with some talent
unfortunately), have some kind of home studio with midi equipment
which I use for hobby-level songwriting and learning about music
on my own (somewhat equivalent to having a band without the usual
quarrels).
Shalom
