What are your favorite Jewish music albums? How do you categorize them?
I divide things pretty much evenly between Israeli music and Klez. Next to
the Klez section are some miscellaneous recordings--a bit of Rabbinic
stuff, some Sephardic music, Yiddish folk--things I'm not sure how to
categorize. The Israeli music is no less diverse than my Rock 'n' roll
section--it ranges from Esther Ofarim to Mashina. Here are some
favorites:
ISRAELI
Shalom Chanoch/"Roman Amiti"
Tammuz
Esther Ofarim/Live at 'Hechal Ha-tarbut'
Yehuda Poliker/Hurts but less
Gronich-Caspi/Behind the Sounds
new ones that I think I'm going to listen to for a while:
Mazi Cohen/Transitions
EthniX/Illilat Tan
Corinne Allal/Mother Tongue
KLEZ
KCB/Yiddishe Rennaissane
Statman-Feldman/Klezmer Music
Shirim Klezmer Orchestra/... of angels and horseraddish
Klezmatics/both of 'em
New Klezmer Trio/Masks and Faces
Kapelye/Chicken
Brave Old World/Klezmer Music
Dave Tarras/Yiddish-American Klezmer Music
and when I'm feeling really good, nothing hits the spot like Alan
Sherman.
