While we're on the subject, I want to recommend a book. If anyone is really  interested in prayer origins and explanations, there are many wonderful ones. But the one I think that I refer to most often is Macy Nulman's Encyclopedia of Jewish Prayer. Available from Jason Aronson Publishing in softback for around $30 (there's a hardback version too for a little more). Not too large, but extremely informative and nicely organized.
