I am neither a Cantor or Soloist!  However, I sing in a choir and am studying 
the Conservative Nusach.  I aspire to become a Hazzan!  
I am a member at Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism in Highland Park, 
IL.
Our soloist, who is not a antor, directs the choir and sings the solos at 
services quite often.  At times, I or another choir member do sing a solo 
during services.  My experience over my years of singing in choirs (30 years) 
is that it can work any way you want it to as long as you are comfortable 
with the arrangement.
