Well, Dror Yikra is never used in a synagogue service.  We only sing it on 
Saturday afternoons, at the third meal (Shalosh Seudos or S'eudah Shlishit).  
And we have been at homes where they sing it Friday night.  Thus, -- in my 
humble opinion -- it is neither piyut NOR liturgical, but just a song!  But a 
nice one...
