[HANASHIR:3990] Re: Cantorial Investiture

Dear Professor Dreskin;

I am responding to your post on the Hanashir list, and I appreciate your
willingness to receive questions.

I would love to be able to go to Cantorial school. I have been a
professional bass player/singer for the last 15 years. I am 36 years old,
and have been married two years, no children yet. I've played all kinds of
music, traveled the world doing it, put out records, and played for other
people. I also have taught Sunday school, led the Youth Choir, and done
song leading at my synagogue for the last 5 years, and on occasion, fill in
for the Cantor. I could probably even afford the school with minimal help
at this point, and would love the year in Israel, etc. My problem is that
I don't have a bachelor's degree. I'm about 30 hours short.

Is there any scenario that you know of where a person can go to Cantorial
school without the bachelor's degree? I certainly would be willing to
finish it by correspondence, and have found several reputable, accredited
colleges that do this. I love to go to school and would have no problem
going to school for the next 6 or so years, but we know that we have to
think about starting the family at some point in the near future. I could
see going to Israel starting next fall, but not 3 falls from now.

Can a person go to Cantorial school, gets their investiture without the
Masters? I know this seems hardly worth the time and money, but I have
been exploring my options over the last 6 months or so, and want to be sure
to explore every option before I give up this dream.

I appreciate your time and willingness to answer questions, and look
forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Holly Montgomery
