Besides going to Cantorial school, there is another route. I don't know all
the details of it but I'll bet someone reading this knows more than I do.
Through the ACC ( the American Conference of Cantors?) you can do this thing
where you can get certified without attending school. Here's what I know:
1. You need to have a sponsoring synagogue that you work with
2. You have to have a mentor cantor who you study under
3. You have to audition with the ACC to get accepted to do all this
4. Within 5 years of being accepted to this course of training and
preparation, you take some tests with the the ACC to get accredited.
I could have some of my details wrong here but the program definitely does
exist. I suggest you contact the ACC. I'm not sure how one does that but
