Hi. Regarding the phrasing issue-yah the "meteg" is a way to know where to 
place emphasis in your pronunciation of the word. Also, if you are singing 
anything from Torah or Haftarah, you can use the placement of the trop  even 
if you don't know how to chant them) as another clue for where to place 
emphasis when singing or saying a word.
